August 2023 - Superintendent's Update
Aug. 2, 2023
Welcome to 2023-24!
The school year is under way at the East Valley Institute of Technology with a record enrollment of nearly 6,000 students at our Main, Power and Apache Junction campuses. Like most districts during the first week of school, we had a few glitches to work through, but overall, everything is running smoothly. Even in 115-degree heat, our students have been enthusiastic and eager to start their career pathway at EVIT.
Orbital welding
This year we have added orbital welding to our curriculum in the Welding Technologies program. Orbital welding is a process used to produce clean-room parts for the semiconductor industry and pipework for many other industries, such as automotive, aerospace and biotechnology. It uses a specialized machine to clamp the tube or pipe as the welding arc rotates. The addition of orbital welding training will give our students an additional skill set to boost their employability.
Semiconductor industry
Welding is not the only EVIT program leading to employment in the semiconductor industry. Students who complete our computer science programs and even graphic design and 3D animation, are landing jobs as manufacturing technicians with employers across the Valley, including Intel Corporation. Superintendent Dr. Chad Wilson was recently interviewed on KTAR radio about EVIT’s role in supplying skilled workers to the semiconductor industry. Listen: https://bit.ly/3OGWo5N.
EVIT Filmmakers
Eight videos created by students in the Video Production program were selected by the All-American High School Film Festival to be screened at the AMC Theatre in New York City’s Times Square. Three music videos were selected by recording artist MMXTOON and her record label, AWAL Records. Other EVIT videos selected for the festival were in the categories of short documentary, micro short, short drama and two in the vlog category. Congrats to our EVIT filmmakers!
East Valley football on EVIT radio
EVIT’s student radio station, 88.7 FM/The Pulse, will broadcast nine East Valley high school football games during the regular season this fall, from Aug. 25 through Nov. 3. The broadcast schedule features schools throughout the East Valley, including Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Tempe, Queen Creek and Ahwatukee. Thank you for your support in helping EVIT change lives.
