Breaking news: Apprenticeships!
The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that the East Valley Institute of Technology has been awarded a $6 million grant to offer registered apprenticeships in in-demand fields. EVIT will create a hub for apprenticeships across Arizona for high school and adult students. Beginning this school year, EVIT will offer apprenticeships in Electrical and Power Transmission, HVAC, Plumbing and Structural Metal Fabricator and Fitter (Welding), with the intent of adding at least two additional apprenticeships by the end of the 4-year grant. EVIT high school programs and adult certificate programs will serve as pre-apprenticeships for the registered apprenticeships and will allow students to earn credit, upon completion of a program, towards the required apprenticeship hours.
Hope moves in
This month, 20 students will be moving into HopeTech, our Main Campus housing for youth who are aging out of the foster care system. Eventually, HopeTech will house up to 64 students, but we are starting with a smaller group in our first year to develop a better understanding of how we can best meet the needs of this vulnerable population. Donations to help with this project are being accepted by the HopeTech Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, at https://bit.ly/HopeTechDonations, and at a HopeTech Amazon Wish List at https://amzn.to/3WdisIJ.
NaphCare donation
The NaphCare Charitable Foundation, Inc., has donated $20,000 to EVIT to support the licensed practical nurse and registered nurse programs. The donation will be used to help fund salaries of program instructors.
Welcome back, teachers
Instructors of EVIT’s high school programs will begin orientation activities next week for the 2024-25 school year, culminating in Meet the Teacher Night from 4 to 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 19 at the Main and Power campuses. EVIT has 127 high school and adult education instructors, including 23 new teachers hired for the 2024-25 school year – and we are still hiring. The first day of school is Wednesday, July 24.
